Women were full and enthusiastic participants in this explicit misogyny directed against Hillary Clinton. Many gleefully insulted her body or her voice, condemned her for a supposed lack of nurture and “relatability,” and wore T-shirts to rallies with chauvinistic slogans such as “Hillary: Couldn’t Satisfy Her Husband, Can’t Satisfy Us.” Some were even spotted approvingly accompanying men whose shirts proclaimed, “She’s a Cunt, Vote for Trump.” And while 54 percent of women overall voted for Clinton, compared to 39 percent for Trump, a majority of white women voted against Clinton. Presumably the Clinton haters did not see themselves partaking of misogyny and would scoff at the idea, but by our definition a vast number unquestionably consumed, spread, and exulted in it.
